End to the summer program and kickin' off the 2013-2014 school year

Our amazing Summer Component ended this year with a banquet and awards presentation and a trip to Charleston, SC with a select number of students. Now the staff is focused on getting everything together to begin our Academic Component on August 24th. We've got great things in store for our students during the Fall including giving out school supplies during our orientation. Enjoy the pics from the summer; we had a good time taking them!

Summer Component 2013 off to a great start!!

On Sunday, June 16, twenty Upward Bound students moved into dorms at Clemson's campus as part of our free, 6-week Summer Component program. During the program, the students will be attending math, english, science, and spanish classes taught by Upward Bound instructors on Tri-County Tech's Pendleton campus. They will also participate in college tours and cultural enrichment activities that include culinary arts, web design, oil painting, and zumba. The purpose of the Summer Component is to prepare our students for the upcoming academic year as well as introduce them to what life is like on a college campus. We are proud of these 20 students who were chosen for the summer program based on their Upward Bound attendance and participation, grades, and an essay. We are also excited about being able to provide them with this opportunity and are looking forward to an amazing summer!

Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search Senior Transition Workshop

On 5/11/13, Upward Bound and our sister TRIO program, Educational Talent Search collaborated to present the Senior Transition Workshop. This workshop provided information to our graduating high school seniors to help prepare them for their move to 2 year and 4 year institutions.

Our topics included:
  • College Orientation (advising, financial aid, and campus resources)
  • Success Skills (study skills, goal setting and time management)
  • Career Development (choosing a major, career/job differences)
  • Freshman perspective (2 former UB and ETS students spoke about what college life is like for them)
We were able to distribute lots of important information about what our seniors can expect as they transition into this new stage of their lives. Our hope is that they will use this information to be successful as they pursue their post-secondary education.

Upward Bound Saturday 4/13/13

This past UB Saturday, in addition to our regular curriculum, our students participated in 2 sessions, a Financial Literacy session which included:
  • Financial Literacy terms and definitions
  • Loans and interest rates
  • The importance of maintaining healthy credit
  • Key items to include in a budget
and the Social Media etiquette session in which they learned how oversharing information on social media impacts them and how to be aware of how their social media behaviors impact others.

We also welcomed our new students, Franchetta, Hunter and Evelin.

UB students complete their first college tour of the academic year

On 4/3/13, 10 of our students took time out of their spring break to join Upward Bound as we toured the University of South Carolina-Upstate and Limestone College. The students had a great time as they learned information about each college, including the admissions criteria, student life, and financial aid options.

Need help completing the FAFSA?

In order for students to receive financial aid to attend college, they must complete the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid). Tri-County Tech offers FREE FAFSA FRIDAYS at Anderson, Pendleton, and Easley campuses where they help students and parents complete the FAFSA.

Even if you don't plan on attending Tri-County Tech, you can still receive help during Free FAFSA Fridays. Click the link for more information: TCTC FAFSA Friday
